Dental Fillings for Cavities

While we should all be visiting the dentist twice a year for a checkup, even those with the best oral hygiene intentions have problems arise. The most common of which comes in the form of a cavity. These dental issues are fixed during a dental restoration procedure wherein a dentist cleans the decayed area, leaving a hole in the tooth that then needs to be filled. This allows for an even surface on your teeth to allow for chewing and to recreate a natural look. When it comes to these fillings, there are options for the type of material used. Here are some of the common choices: 

Gold Dental Fillings 

Gold is a strong, non-corrosive material that acts as a great filler for cavities. When properly cared for, gold fillings can last up to 15 years. Because of the price of gold, however, the cost of these fillings tend to be higher. Also, keep in mind that it may take more than one appointment and will result in an eye-catching color. 

Silver Dental Fillings

Silver is also a strong material for a filling, lasting for up to 12 years. While it’s called silver, this filling also includes other minerals, such as zinc and copper. Because more people find it less aesthetically pleasing and because the material is more likely to expand and contract over time, it ends up being a less popular choice for filling material. 

Composite Dental Fillings 

The composite filling material is a combination of plastic and resin that is molded into the cavity as a malleable material and then is hardened with a curing light. Because of the way it is made, the material can be customized to match the color of your existing teeth, making it a popular choice for patients and a common recommendation by dentists. However, they are not as long-lasting as the gold and silver fillings and can be more expensive. 

Ceramic Dental Fillings 

In what some consider to be the most cosmetically appealing filling material option, ceramic fillings are created using a porcelain material. Ceramic matches the color of existing teeth and is good at resisting stains. The downside is that ceramic is a brittle material, so can result in breakage. 

Acrylic Dental Fillings

Made from a mix of glass and acrylic materials, acrylic fillings last less than five years. Acrylic ends up being the material of choice for cavities in children, as their teeth are growing rapidly and the material releases fluoride, which helps prevent additional tooth decay.
