Cavities Out of Nowhere?

A person can go many years (including all through childhood) and never experience a cavity until all of a sudden they get one. Why does this happen?

There are several explanations as to why you are being surprised by an out-of-the-blue cavity. Here are the most common reasons:

A Change In Your Daily Routine

When you go through a stressful life change such as going back to school, beginning a new job, or moving to a new home, your health can be affected. Your oral health too is influenced by stress in the body, which can lead to what seems a sudden cavity.

The cavity can be formed as a result of experience a dry mouth, which itself is a side effect of stress. Saliva helps neutralize the acids in the mouth that lead to cavities and tooth decay, and stress can slow down saliva production. To help combat this, make sure you drink plenty of water and practice stress management techniques.

Improper Nutrition

Foods that are high in sugar, acids and carbohydrates can lead to cavities and decay. While it is fine to eat sugary treats now and then, it is important to brush, floss and rinse as soon as possible, and to especially avoid sugary beverages. It is also advisable to maintain a diet of nutrient-dense foods that are full of fiber.

Changes In Dental Habits

If you are not brushing and flossing your teeth regularly and thoroughly, then you probably want to rethink your oral hygiene routine.

On the other hand, if you are brushing more vigorously than necessary, you risk removing the protective enamel of the tooth, which makes it more vulnerable to decay. This can also lead to gum recession, which exposes the root of your tooth below the gumline. The root itself does not have protective enamel, so exposure can lead to cavities.
