How Much Calcium Does Your Body Need?

We all know calcium builds strong bones and is important in preventing osteoporosis. But did you know adding the right amount of calcium to your diet also benefits your oral health?

Calcium is Good for Our Oral Health

Before birth, we begin storing calcium and other vital nutrients to grow healthy, strong teeth and bones.  As we age, calcium helps repair and strengthen our teeth, which makes them more resistant to decay and fortifies them against disease.

Good Sources of Calcium

How can you get the amount of calcium your body needs? The most easily absorbed source is from milk and other dairy products, which also contain phosphorous, magnesium, and Vitamin D. Together, these vitamins and nutrients strengthen and reinforce tooth enamel.

Other good sources of calcium include broccoli, collard greens, and kale, and other dark leafy greens. In fact, collard greens alone contain 268 mg of calcium per cup!

Oranges, sardines, white beans, tofu, almonds, and some breakfast cereals and juices are all non-dairy alternatives to get the daily suggested serving of calcium your body needs.

How Much Calcium is Recommended Daily?

Your age and gender generally determines the recommended calcium intake you should have. Studies show that consuming more than 800 mg of calcium a day reduces the risk of developing gum disease.

  • Children ages one to eight need between 500-800 mg a day
  • Teenagers need about 1,300 mg
  • Adults and nursing mothers between the ages of 19 and 50 need 1,000 mg
