Is Your Child Grinding Her Teeth?
It is not unusual for children to grind their teeth at night while sleeping, or even during waking hours. Here are some things to keep in mind when it comes to your child and her teeth grinding habit:
Why Does My Child Grind Her Teeth?
Teeth grinding can happen when infants are teething, or even when children grow their permanent teeth. Other children may grind them due to pain, frustration or stress. It may also be due to having teeth that are not in alignment. Also, certain medical conditions and genetics may also be responsible for bruxism.
Is Bruxism Something to be Worried About?
Teeth grinding is not unusual among children. 20-30% of children will clench or grind their teeth at one point or another during their childhood. Fortunately, most outgrow it and no enduring tooth or jaw damage results during these phases.
Nevertheless, if you hear your child grinding his or her teeth, it’s important to get them evaluated by a dental professional.
Some Signs of Bruxism Include:
- Grinding sounds while your child is sleeping
- Complaints of pain when chewing
- Extra tooth sensitivity to hot and cold
- Soreness in the face or jaw, particularly when waking in the morning
Any of these symptoms, whether mild or severe, warrant a visit to your child’s dentist. As mentioned earlier, most cases of bruxism in children are fleeting and resolve themselves. However, depending on the cause or severity of your child’s bruxism, your dentist may recommend one or more treatment options. As an example, if your child grinds his teeth as a response to stress, a more calming bedtime routine may be suggested and encouraged.
If tooth or enamel wear or damage is discovered during your visit, or your child grinds her teeth very frequently, a custom-made night guard may be worn to protect teeth and discourage grinding.
